TV Girl is a California based indie pop band, consisting of Brad Petering, Jason Wyman, and Wyatt Harmon. The band started in 2010, and gained mainstream attention that same year, when they sampled Todd Rundgren’s 1973 solo version of “Hello It’s Me” on their song “If You Want It” from their self-titled debut EP.
There’s a number of things that makes TV Girl’s music unique. For starters, in many songs you can hear two voices, one of a male and the other a female, with the two often talking about love. These two characters are called Rudolph and Catherine, and they are lovers who have a toxic like love between them because they apparently can’t be together.
Also, TV Girl’s music has a retro, hypnotic, 60’s feel, and often samples music from that era, such as in the song “Lovers’ Rock,” where there is a looped sample from the intro to The Shirelles’ single “The Dance is Over”. Moreover their music can be considered part hip hop and and part electronic, and frequently incorporates sampling, keyboards, and reverb effects.
Personally I connect with and appreciate TV Girl’s lyrics, which focus on sentimental, romantic themes, such as relationships, memories, love and loss etc. In general I feel their songs and lyrics will resonate with most people, so if you haven’t given them a chance yet, I strongly encourage that you change that ASAP!
