Get to know Senior and Golden Gloves Boxer, Armani Johnson ’23

First off, being a recent transfer, how are you feeling about SFDSHS?

I like the school, it has a warm home feeling to it, I like the teachers as well. Everyone is cool and down to earth.

So for those that don’t know, you are a very skilled and accomplished amateur boxer. How long have you been boxing for?

I’ve been boxing for 3 years.. Since 2019 to be exact.

How did you get into boxing?

I first went to one of my local gyms and began hitting a heavy bag. A couple of individuals thought I was actually a trained boxer at the time when I really wasn’t. I later found out that the gym had a boxing program and from there I’ve joined and trained ever since. Something that separated me from the other individuals in the class was my work ethic and my ability to be coached. That’s when my coaches said they saw something in me at that time and I really liked the discipline that came with boxing so that’s what made me stick with the sport. After 2 years of training, I’ve advanced to competition level.

What do you like and enjoy about boxing?

I enjoy the flow, movement, and rhythm of boxing along with the technique and science behind it. I also enjoy how it helps with discipline and mental health. I like how it makes me a better person, and I like the fight buildup each moment before I step in the ring.

Do you think you will continue to pursue boxing as a career?

Yes I do, I plan on having an accomplished amatuer record with at least 55-60 fights and going to the 2024 olympics. After the Olympics, I plan on having my first pro debut at 20-21 years old. I eventually want to become a world champion in several different weight divisions and retire with a great record and status.

What are some of your accomplishments from boxing?

One of my accomplishments would be being a part of one of the biggest boxing tournaments in America, in one of America’s biggest cities (Golden Gloves, Chicago)

Do you have a favorite boxer?

Currently my favorite boxers at this time would be firstly Canelo Alvarez along with some other fighters such as, Errol Spence, Gervonta Davis, and Shakur Stevenson. Some retired boxers would be Tommy Hearns, Mike Tyson, Roy Jones Jr, and Floyd Mayweather.
